"How many monks are still living here?" - a common question once in a while. Yet, monastic life has just restarted in Neuzelle. The historical Abbey of Neuzelle, after being part of this area for 550 years, had been closed down in 1817 by the Prussian king. In August 2017, 200 years later, four Cistercian monks from Stift Heiligenkreuz in Austria, invited by Görlitz's diocesan bishop Rev. Wolfgang Ipolt, were sent out from the Vienna woods to find out if it was viable to reestablish the monastic tradition in Neuzelle. On September 2, 2018, the Priorate of Our Lady of Neuzelle has been founded.
